Albino Angelfish
Pterophyllum scalare
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Silver Angelfish · albino
📍 South America
The Albino Angelfish has a pale white or cream body with red eyes. It retains the same elegant shape and semi-aggressive nature as other angelfish — best kept in mated pairs or alone in community tanks with appropriately sized peaceful fish.
Care Guide
Diet
Feed high-quality flake food and small pellets as a staple, supplemented 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia. Albino Angelfish are carnivorous and benefit from varied protein sources. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes.
Behavior
Albino Angelfish are semi-aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding. They are graceful swimmers that prefer vertical tank spaces and appreciate tall plants for refuge. They may nip at smaller fish or long-finned species, and are best kept singly or in established mated pairs.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is moderately difficult and requires a dedicated breeding tank with soft, acidic water (pH 6.0-6.5) and temperatures around 28°C. Pairs are monogamous and will lay eggs on vertical surfaces; parents typically guard fry for 2-3 weeks before they become independent. Successful breeding requires patience and optimal water conditions.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae eater that occupies bottom zone and won't compete with angelfish
Similar size and temperament; both prefer warm water and mid-level swimming zones
Schooling fish that stay mid-water and are too large to be predated upon
Peaceful schooling fish that occupy mid-water and avoid angelfish territory
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or commercial ich treatment for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent water changes, remove sharp decorations, treat with antibacterial medication if severe, ensure adequate filtration
Bacterial Infections
Open sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, color fading
Perform 50% water change immediately, treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, maintain pristine water conditions and reduce stress
Hole-in-the-Head Disease
Small holes or pits on head and lateral line, lethargy, loss of appetite
Improve water quality and perform frequent water changes, use activated carbon in filter, treat with metronidazole if parasitic cause is suspected
