Aura Blue Shrimp
Caridina sp. (Aura)
📍 Taiwan selective breeding
Aura Blue Shrimp are a stunning selectively bred Caridina variety featuring a deep blue coloration with iridescent shimmer across the body and appendages. This variety is prized for its consistent coloring and graceful appearance, making it a centerpiece species in planted aquariums. The blue hue intensifies with proper water parameters and diet.
Care Guide
Diet
Aura Blue Shrimp are detritivores that graze on biofilm, algae, and decaying plant matter throughout the day. Supplement with high-quality shrimp pellets (Shirakura, Mosura) 2-3 times weekly and occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini. Calcium supplementation supports molting and shell hardness.
Behavior
These shrimp are active grazers, constantly foraging across substrate and hardscape for food and biofilm. They exhibit natural molting cycles every 4-6 weeks; provide plenty of hiding spots and plants to reduce stress during vulnerable periods. Colony dynamics are peaceful with minimal aggression; they thrive in groups of 10 or more.
Breeding
Aura Blue Shrimp require soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5, GH 4-6) to successfully breed and produce viable offspring. Females berrying regularly in established colonies; shrimplets are released as miniature versions and require abundant biofilm and fine food particles. Breeding success depends heavily on stable parameters and low TDS (100-150).
Tank Mates
Small, peaceful algae eater that does not prey on shrimp
Tiny, non-aggressive fish that ignores shrimp and shares similar water preferences
Nano fish that coexist peacefully without predating on shrimp
Larger shrimp species; generally compatible but may compete for food
Provides biofilm, shelter, and grazing surface for shrimp
Hardy plant that creates hiding spots and supports biofilm growth
Common Diseases
Molting Failure / Incomplete Molt
Shrimp unable to shed exoskeleton completely; stuck in molt, lethargy, death within 24-48 hours
Ensure adequate calcium and mineral content via supplementation (GH Booster, Salty Shrimp Mineral); maintain stable pH and temperature; increase water change frequency to support osmotic balance
Muscular Necrosis (MSN)
White spots or patches on body and appendages; muscle tissue appears opaque; progressive deterioration
Increase water changes (25-30% weekly); boost mineral supplementation; maintain optimal pH 5.5-6.5 and GH 4-6; remove affected individuals to prevent spread
Vorticella / Fungal Infection
White fuzzy coating on body, appendages, or gills; lethargy; difficulty moving
Perform 30% water change; add Indian almond leaves or alder cones for tannins; increase aeration; maintain pristine water quality; avoid copper-based treatments (toxic to shrimp)
Copper Toxicity
Sudden death, erratic swimming, paralysis, color fading
Immediately perform 50% water change; check all medications and fertilizers for copper content; use only copper-free products; avoid tap water with high copper levels; use RO water if necessary
