Black Ghost Knifefish
Apteronotus albifrons
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Apteronotidae
📍 Amazon Basin, South America
Jet-black fish with two white bands on its tail. Generates a weak electric field to navigate and communicate. Nocturnal, shy, and sensitive to water quality. Grows large.
Care Guide
Diet
Black Ghost Knifefish are carnivorous and prefer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small crustaceans. Feed small portions once daily, as they are nocturnal hunters with high metabolic rates. Supplement with quality sinking pellets designed for carnivorous bottom feeders.
Behavior
Nocturnal and reclusive, this species hides during the day and becomes active at night, using its weak electric field to navigate and communicate in darkness. They are solitary and semi-aggressive, especially toward other knifefish and similarly-sized fish. Provide plenty of caves, driftwood, and dense plants to reduce stress and territorial aggression.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is extremely rare and poorly documented; most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught. Breeding requires very large tanks (200+ gallons), specific water conditions, and pair compatibility is unpredictable. Not recommended for hobbyists.
Tank Mates
Nocturnal bottom-dweller with similar habitat preferences; non-aggressive and unlikely to compete for food
Peaceful nocturnal catfish that occupies different feeding zones and won't trigger predatory response
Small schooling fish; may be viewed as prey if they venture into the knifefish's territory at night
Fast-moving schooling fish that generally avoid the knifefish but require careful monitoring
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against objects, lethargy
Raise water temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform frequent water changes, use aquarium salt or ich medication; ensure excellent filtration and water quality
Bacterial Infection
Fin rot, body sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, erratic swimming
Perform large water changes, improve water quality, use antibiotic medication if severe; isolate if possible to prevent spread
Electric Organ Dysfunction
Loss of electric field generation, disorientation, inability to navigate, collision with objects
Maintain pristine water conditions with frequent changes; ensure low stress environment with hiding places; may be irreversible if organ is damaged
Parasitic Infection
Excessive mucus coating, scratching against surfaces, weight loss, visible parasites
Use antiparasitic medication, perform water changes, quarantine if possible; maintain optimal water parameters to boost immune system
