Crown Shrimp

Caridina logemanni

📍 Taiwan selective breeding

Ask Finn

Crown Shrimp (Caridina logemanni) is a striking freshwater shrimp featuring a distinctive crown-like pattern of dark bands or spots across its carapace and body, with coloration ranging from reddish-brown to deep burgundy. This ornamental variety is prized by aquarists for its bold patterning and relatively hardy nature compared to other Caridina species. The crown marking becomes more pronounced as the shrimp matures, making it an attractive centerpiece for planted nano tanks.

Care Guide

Diet

Crown Shrimp are detritivores that graze on biofilm, algae, and decaying plant matter throughout the day. Supplement with high-quality shrimp-specific foods such as Shirakura or Mosura pellets 2-3 times weekly, and offer blanched vegetables like spinach, zucchini, or cucumber occasionally. Ensure adequate mineral content through food and water parameters to support molting.

Behavior

Crown Shrimp are active grazers that spend most of their time foraging on substrate and plant surfaces, particularly in low-light conditions. They are social and thrive in colonies where they exhibit natural behaviors including molting cycles every 4-6 weeks. Males may display mild competition during breeding season but remain non-aggressive toward females and other colony members.

Breeding

Crown Shrimp require soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5, GH 4-6) to breed successfully, as harder water inhibits reproduction. Females produce small batches of 20-30 shrimplets that develop fully in the mother's saddle before being released as miniature adults. High water quality and stable parameters are essential; even slight pH or hardness fluctuations can cause breeding failure or molting issues.

Common Diseases

Molting Failure / Incomplete Molt

Symptoms

Shrimp unable to shed exoskeleton, remaining stuck in old shell; lethargy and loss of appetite

Treatment

Increase mineral supplementation (calcium, magnesium) via specialized shrimp mineral additives; ensure GH 4-6 dGH; perform 25% water change; maintain stable pH and temperature

Muscular Necrosis (MSC)

Symptoms

White/opaque patches on muscle tissue visible through translucent areas; loss of color; paralysis or death

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes; increase aeration; add Indian almond leaves or driftwood for tannins; ensure adequate mineral content; isolate affected individuals

Vorticella / Fungal Infection

Symptoms

White fuzzy coating on body or appendages; lethargy; difficulty molting

Treatment

Perform 50% water change; add Indian almond leaves for tannins; increase water flow; avoid copper-based treatments (toxic to shrimp); maintain optimal water parameters

Copper Toxicity

Symptoms

Sudden death or paralysis; discoloration; lethargy after medication exposure

Treatment

Immediately perform large water change (80%); use copper-free medications only; verify all tank additives and plant fertilizers are shrimp-safe; use activated carbon in filter
