Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Characidae

Care Guide
Diet
False Rummy Nose Tetras are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake foods, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small amounts once daily, offering only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Occasional vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or algae-based supplements supports digestive health.
Behavior
These are highly social, active schooling fish that display their best coloration and behavior in groups of 12 or more. They occupy the mid-water column and are constantly in motion, darting and weaving through plants and décor. They are peaceful and non-aggressive, making them excellent community fish that rarely interact negatively with tankmates.
Breeding
Breeding False Rummy Nose Tetras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved by hobbyists. They require soft, acidic water (pH 5.0-6.0), dense vegetation or spawning mops, and very small fry that are challenging to rear. Success requires patience, specialized conditioning, and careful water management.
Tank Mates
Similar water requirements and peaceful temperament; excellent algae control without competing for food
Peaceful mid-water dweller; prefers slightly warmer water but compatible with False Rummy Nose schools
Peaceful invertebrate that shares soft water preferences; may be preyed upon by very hungry tetras
Hardy plant that provides shelter and security for schooling fish without being uprooted
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against décor, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt or ich medication; maintain treatment for 10-14 days
Neon Tetra Disease
Loss of coloration, curved spine, erratic swimming, white stripe along lateral line becomes unclear
No cure exists; isolate affected fish to prevent spread, maintain pristine water quality, euthanize severely affected individuals
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Perform 50% water change, improve water quality, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure good filtration and avoid overcrowding
Columnaris
White or grayish film on body or mouth, loss of appetite, rapid gill movement
Isolate affected fish, treat with antibacterial medication, maintain water temperature at 26-28°C, perform frequent water changes
