Variety of Black Skirt Tetra · GloFish

📍 Captive-bred (hybrid)

Ask Finn

GloFish Tetras are fluorescent variants of the Black Skirt Tetra, created through genetic engineering to express vivid colors — Starfire Red, Electric Green, Sunburst Orange, Cosmic Blue, Galactic Purple, and Moonrise Pink. They glow intensely under blue LED or blacklight. Care requirements are identical to Black Skirt Tetras: peaceful, schooling fish that thrive in groups of 6+.

Care Guide

Diet

GloFish Tetras are omnivorous and thrive on high-quality flake food as their staple, supplemented 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes, as overfeeding degrades water quality.

Behavior

These are active, peaceful schooling fish that display their best colors and behavior when kept in groups of 6 or more. They are mid-water swimmers that dart playfully through the tank, particularly active during feeding times and when exposed to blue LED lighting that makes their fluorescent colors glow intensely.

Breeding

Breeding GloFish Tetras in captivity is difficult and rarely successful in home aquariums. They require very specific conditions including soft, acidic water, dense plants for egg scattering, and immediate removal of adults to prevent egg predation. Most captive specimens are bred commercially using hormone injections.

Common Diseases

Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)

Symptoms

White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against objects, lethargy

Treatment

Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or commercial ich treatment; maintain for 10-14 days

Fin Rot

Symptoms

Frayed or disintegrating fins, white or black edges on fin tissue, lethargy

Treatment

Perform 25% water changes every 2-3 days, improve water quality, use antibiotic medication if severe; ensure adequate filtration and avoid overcrowding

Neon Tetra Disease

Symptoms

Loss of coloration, curved spine, erratic swimming, white stripe along lateral line becomes cloudy

Treatment

No cure exists; isolate affected fish to prevent spread, maintain pristine water conditions, consider euthanasia if severely affected to prevent transmission

Bacterial Infection

Symptoms

Red streaks on body, swollen belly, torn fins, loss of appetite, cloudy eyes

Treatment

Perform daily 25% water changes, use broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, improve water quality and reduce stocking density
