Green Jade Shrimp
Neocaridina davidi
Animalia›Arthropoda›Malacostraca›Atyidae
Variety of Red Cherry Shrimp · green jade
📍 Taiwan (captive developed)
Opaque jade-green Neocaridina with excellent colour contrast in planted tanks. Rarer than the red and blue variants. As hardy and prolific as all other Neocaridina — a great addition to any shrimp collection.
Care Guide
Diet
Green Jade Shrimp are primarily algae and biofilm grazers that thrive in established tanks with natural food sources. Supplement with blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini, cucumber) 2-3 times weekly and high-quality sinking pellets or algae wafers. Avoid overfeeding as uneaten food degrades water quality; offer only what can be consumed in 2-3 hours.
Behavior
These shrimp are peaceful, active foragers that spend most of their time grazing on surfaces and plant leaves. They are social animals that do best in groups of 6 or more, where they exhibit natural schooling behavior and reduced stress. They are primarily nocturnal but remain active throughout the day in well-planted tanks.
Breeding
Green Jade Shrimp breed readily in captivity under stable conditions, making them excellent for beginners interested in shrimp reproduction. Females produce 20-30 shrimplets every 4-5 weeks without male intervention; provide dense plants or moss for shrimplets to hide and forage. High survival rates occur in established tanks with minimal predation and adequate biofilm.
Tank Mates
Same water parameters and peaceful temperament; excellent algae control partners
Compatible Neocaridina variant with identical care requirements; can interbreed
Peaceful algae eater that shares biofilm grazing habits and similar water needs
Small, peaceful fish that won't prey on adult shrimp; prefers similar warm temperatures
Peaceful algae grazer with identical care requirements; no predation risk
Common Diseases
Bacterial Infection
Discoloration, lethargy, molting problems, white spots or lesions on body
Perform 25% water changes every 2-3 days, improve filtration, remove uneaten food, maintain stable parameters (pH 6.8-7.5)
Fungal Infection
White fuzzy growth on body or appendages, particularly after molting
Increase water flow and aeration, perform daily 25% water changes, remove affected individuals to quarantine if severe
Molting Issues
Difficulty shedding exoskeleton, incomplete molts, death shortly after molting
Ensure adequate calcium and minerals via quality food and mineral supplements; maintain stable pH and temperature; provide hiding places
Parasitic Infection
Excessive scratching, lethargy, loss of appetite, visible parasites on body
Quarantine affected shrimp, perform frequent water changes, avoid copper-based treatments; improve tank hygiene and biofilm availability
