Care Guide
Diet
Helfrichi Firefish are carnivorous and require a varied diet of small meaty foods. Feed high-quality frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and small copepods once daily in small portions. Supplement with quality micro pellets designed for small marine fish to ensure complete nutrition.
Behavior
This firefish is peaceful and shy, spending much of its time hovering near the substrate or darting between cover. It is generally solitary or pairs with a mate, and rarely bothers other tank inhabitants. The species is most active during dawn and dusk, displaying characteristic rapid movements and color displays when comfortable.
Breeding
Breeding Helfrichi Firefish in captivity is extremely rare and difficult, with very few documented successes in home aquariums. They require specific environmental triggers, stable conditions, and a bonded pair, making captive reproduction impractical for most hobbyists. Wild-caught specimens are the norm in the aquarium trade.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful temperament and reef-safe; compatible water parameters
Small, peaceful goby with similar habitat preferences and non-aggressive behavior
Can coexist but may compete for hiding spaces; monitor for aggression
Peaceful invertebrate that occupies different ecological niche; reef-safe
Non-aggressive and beneficial; will not compete with firefish for food or space
Common Diseases
Ich (Marine Ich)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against surfaces
Quarantine immediately; treat with copper-based medication or hyposalinity; maintain stable water parameters
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, lethargy, rapid gill movement
Quarantine and treat with copper medication or formalin; increase aeration and maintain optimal water quality
Bacterial Infection
Torn fins, open sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite
Improve water quality, perform partial water changes, consider antibiotic treatment if severe
