📍 New Zealand

Ask Finn

Fine-leaved grass-like plant that forms low carpets. One of the easier carpet plants — tolerates lower light than most. From New Zealand.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or transparent patches

Treatment

Increase fertilizer dosing; ensure macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and micronutrients (iron, boron, manganese) are adequate. Consider adding CO2 if not already present

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating plant leaves, reduced light penetration, plant growth slowing

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily; increase water changes; add algae-eating fish or shrimp; improve water circulation

Root Rot

Symptoms

Blackened or mushy roots, plant detachment from substrate, overall plant decline despite good conditions

Treatment

Improve substrate drainage and water circulation; reduce organic waste buildup; perform partial water changes; consider replanting in fresh substrate if severely affected

Melting

Symptoms

Rapid leaf deterioration, transparent or dissolving leaves, plant collapse within days to weeks

Treatment

Gradually acclimate plant to new tank conditions over 2-3 weeks; maintain stable water parameters; ensure adequate lighting and nutrients; trim affected portions and allow recovery
