Ludwigia Cuba

Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Cuba'

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaMyrtalesOnagraceae

📍 South America

Ask Finn

One of the most striking red-orange stem plants. Whorled leaf arrangement creates a unique spiral pattern. Demanding but spectacular.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency (Iron/Magnesium)

Symptoms

Yellowing of new leaves while veins remain green; stunted growth; pale coloration

Treatment

Increase liquid fertilizer dosing, particularly micronutrient trace elements containing iron and magnesium. Ensure CO2 levels are adequate (30-40 ppm) to support nutrient uptake

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating leaves; reduced light penetration; plant appears smothered

Treatment

Increase water changes to 30-50% weekly, reduce photoperiod to 8-10 hours, add algae-eating shrimp or fish, and manually remove affected leaves. Ensure CO2 and nutrient balance to outcompete algae

Melting (Tissue Decay)

Symptoms

Leaves become translucent, mushy, and dissolve; stems become soft and collapse

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, ensure adequate CO2 injection, increase lighting intensity, and remove severely affected stems. This often occurs during acclimation to new tank conditions

Slow/Stunted Growth

Symptoms

Minimal new leaf development; plant appears dormant; leaves remain small

Treatment

Verify CO2 levels are 30-40 ppm, increase light intensity to 60+ PAR, dose all-in-one fertilizer 2-3 times weekly, and ensure water temperature is 24-28°C for optimal metabolic activity
