Mischling Shrimp

Caridina sp. (Mischling)

📍 Germany / Taiwan selective breeding

Ask Finn

Mischling Shrimp are a selectively bred Caridina variety known for their striking mixed coloration pattern, typically featuring a blend of red, black, and white bands or spots across the body and legs. These shrimp exhibit variable patterning within the same colony, making each individual unique and visually appealing. The name 'Mischling' (German for 'mixed breed') reflects their hybrid genetic background from selective breeding programs.

Care Guide

Diet

Mischling Shrimp are detritivores that thrive on biofilm, decaying plant matter, and algae naturally present in the tank. Supplement with high-quality shrimp-specific foods such as Shirakura or Mosura pellets 2-3 times weekly. Occasionally offer blanched vegetables like spinach, zucchini, or cucumber to ensure balanced nutrition and support molting.

Behavior

These shrimp are active grazers, constantly foraging along the substrate and plant surfaces for food particles and biofilm. They exhibit typical Caridina behavior including frequent molting (every 4-6 weeks), during which they remain hidden and vulnerable. Colony dynamics are generally peaceful, though males may occasionally compete for females during breeding season.

Breeding

Mischling Shrimp require soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5, GH 4-6) to successfully breed and produce viable offspring. Females carry eggs (berried) for 2-3 weeks before releasing fully-formed miniature shrimp into the water column. High-quality water conditions and stable parameters are essential for successful reproduction and colony establishment.

Common Diseases

Molting Failure / Incomplete Molt

Symptoms

Shrimp unable to shed exoskeleton completely, appearing stuck or deformed; lethargy and loss of appetite

Treatment

Ensure adequate mineral content via GH boosters (e.g., Salty Shrimp GH+); maintain stable pH 5.5-6.5 and temperature; increase water change frequency; provide tannins via Indian almond leaves or driftwood

Muscular Necrosis (MSN)

Symptoms

White/opaque patches on body and limbs; progressive muscle degeneration; shrimp become immobile

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes; increase mineral supplementation; maintain optimal pH and GH; remove affected individuals to prevent spread; ensure adequate nutrition

Vorticella / Protozoan Infection

Symptoms

White fuzzy coating on body and antennae; lethargy; difficulty moving; reduced feeding

Treatment

Perform 50% water change; increase aeration; add Indian almond leaves or oak leaves for tannins; maintain stable parameters; avoid copper-based treatments (toxic to shrimp); consider salt baths in extreme cases

Copper Toxicity

Symptoms

Sudden death or paralysis; erratic swimming; loss of color; gasping behavior

Treatment

Immediately perform large water change (50-75%); use copper-free medications only; check all supplements and foods for copper content; use RO water if tap water contains copper; avoid all copper-based algaecides and fish medications
