Mosura Pinto Shrimp

Caridina logemanni

📍 Taiwan / Japan selective breeding

Ask Finn

The Mosura Pinto Shrimp is a selectively bred Caridina logemanni variant prized for its striking black and white (or red and white) pinto patterning. This variety displays bold, irregular patches of solid coloration across the body and legs, creating a distinctive "painted" appearance that makes it highly sought after by advanced shrimp keepers. The intensity and distribution of color can vary between individuals, adding to the appeal of maintaining a colony.

Care Guide

Diet

Mosura Pinto Shrimp are detritivores that thrive on biofilm and algae naturally present in established tanks. Supplement with high-quality shrimp-specific foods such as Mosura or Shirakura pellets, and offer blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini) 1-2 times weekly. Avoid overfeeding; a small pinch of food 2-3 times per week is typically sufficient for an established colony.

Behavior

These shrimp are primarily nocturnal grazers, spending most of their time foraging along the substrate and plant surfaces. They are relatively shy and will hide in dense vegetation or hardscape when stressed. Molting occurs every 4-6 weeks; provide adequate calcium and minerals to support successful molts, and avoid disturbing shrimp during this vulnerable period.

Breeding

Mosura Pinto Shrimp require soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5, GH 4-6) to breed successfully; they are more sensitive to water parameters than Neocaridina. Females carry berries for 20-24 days before releasing fully-formed shrimplets. Breeding success depends on stable parameters and excellent water quality; even minor fluctuations can cause females to drop eggs.

Common Diseases

Molting Failure / Incomplete Molt

Symptoms

Shrimp unable to shed exoskeleton completely; stuck in old shell; lethargy; death within days

Treatment

Increase calcium and mineral supplementation (GH Booster, Mosura mineral powder); maintain stable pH and temperature; ensure adequate iodine; perform 25% water change

Muscular Necrosis (MSN)

Symptoms

White, opaque patches on body and legs; loss of color intensity; paralysis; rapid decline

Treatment

No cure; prevent by maintaining pristine water quality, stable parameters, and avoiding copper exposure; isolate affected shrimp to prevent spread

Vorticella / Fungal Infection

Symptoms

White fuzzy coating on body; lethargy; difficulty molting; cloudy appearance

Treatment

Increase water changes (50% every 2-3 days); add Indian almond leaves or alder cones for tannins; maintain optimal water parameters; avoid antibiotics (copper-sensitive)

Copper Toxicity

Symptoms

Sudden death; erratic behavior; color loss; gill damage

Treatment

Perform immediate 50% water change; use copper-free medications and fertilizers; test water for copper contamination; use RO water if tap water is contaminated
