Narrow Leaf Java Fern

Microsorum pteropus Narrow Leaf

📍 Southeast Asia

Ask Finn

Narrow Leaf Java Fern is a slender, elegant variant of the popular Java Fern with distinctly thin, needle-like fronds that create a delicate, feathery appearance. This slow-growing epiphytic fern thrives in low to medium light and requires no CO2, making it ideal for beginner aquarists. Its compact growth habit and attractive foliage make it perfect for attaching to rocks or driftwood in any freshwater setup.

Common Diseases

Rhizome Rot

Symptoms

Blackening or mushy rhizome; fronds detach easily; foul odor from base

Treatment

Ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate; improve water circulation; remove affected portions with clean scissors; check for excess organic buildup

Leaf Melt / Transition Melt

Symptoms

Fronds turn translucent, mushy, or dissolve; occurs after planting or water parameter changes

Treatment

Maintain stable water parameters; ensure adequate light and water flow; trim affected leaves; be patient—new growth typically emerges within 2-4 weeks

Algae Overgrowth on Leaves

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating fronds; reduces photosynthesis and plant vigor

Treatment

Increase water flow around the plant; reduce light duration if excessive; manually remove algae with soft brush; add algae-eating fauna (Amano Shrimp, Otocinclus); maintain nutrient balance

Iron Deficiency (Chlorosis)

Symptoms

New fronds emerge pale or yellowish; older fronds remain green; stunted growth

Treatment

Dose liquid iron supplement (chelated iron) 1-2 times weekly; ensure adequate macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium); test and adjust pH if above 7.5
