Needle Leaf Java Fern
Microsorum pteropus Needle Leaf
📍 Southeast Asia
Needle Leaf Java Fern is a slender, delicate variant of the popular Java Fern with thin, needle-like leaves that create an elegant, feathery appearance. This rhizome-based epiphyte is extremely hardy and requires no substrate rooting, making it ideal for attaching to rocks or driftwood. It thrives in low to medium light and is one of the easiest aquatic plants for beginners.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae eater; will not damage or uproot the plant.
Small, peaceful community fish that won't disturb the delicate leaves.
Gentle algae grazer; safe around epiphytic plants.
Peaceful mid-water swimmer; may nibble occasionally but generally compatible.
Pairs well visually; similar care requirements and growth rate.
Common Diseases
Leaf Melt / Transition Melt
Older leaves turn translucent, mushy, or dissolve; typically occurs after initial planting or water parameter changes.
Maintain stable water parameters (pH, temperature, hardness); ensure good water circulation; remove dead leaves promptly. New growth will replace melted foliage.
Algae on Leaves
Green, brown, or black algae coating the needle-like leaves; reduces photosynthesis and plant vigor.
Gently brush algae off with a soft brush or cloth; reduce lighting duration; increase water circulation; add algae-eating fauna (Amano Shrimp, Otocinclus); maintain nutrient balance to prevent excess algae.
Rhizome Rot
Rhizome becomes soft, mushy, or blackened; leaves detach easily; foul odor may develop.
Ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate and is exposed to water flow; improve water circulation; remove affected portions with sterile scissors; check for decaying plant matter nearby and remove.
Stunted Growth / Iron Deficiency
New leaves emerge pale or yellowish; growth slows significantly; older leaves remain green.
Add liquid all-in-one fertilizer or iron supplement; ensure adequate lighting; verify water parameters are stable; perform partial water changes to maintain nutrient levels.
