Nesaea Crassicaulis
Nesaea crassicaulis
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Lythraceae
📍 Africa
A striking stem plant with relatively large, broadly oval leaves that take on vivid orange-red tones under high light. The thick stems give it its species name (crassicaulis = thick-stemmed). It requires good light, CO2, and regular fertilisation but rewards with some of the most vivid colouration of any aquatic stem plant.
Tank Mates
Gentle algae grazers that won't damage plant leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, peaceful shrimp that won't uproot or consume healthy plant tissue
Peaceful schooling fish that provide movement without disturbing rooted plants
Algae-eating fish that graze on plant surfaces without damaging healthy tissue
Complementary stem plant with similar care requirements; creates attractive layered aquascape
Foreground plant that pairs well with mid-background Nesaea; requires similar high-light conditions
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency (Iron/Macronutrient)
Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, loss of red coloration despite adequate light
Increase fertilizer dosing frequency to 3-4 times weekly; use comprehensive all-in-one fertilizers or separate macro/micro supplements; test water parameters
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced photosynthesis, plant vigor decline
Increase water circulation, reduce photoperiod to 8-10 hours daily, manually remove algae with soft brush, introduce algae-eating shrimp or fish
Melting (Tissue Necrosis)
Leaves become translucent, mushy, and dissolve; typically occurs after major water changes or poor acclimation
Ensure gradual acclimation over 2-3 weeks; maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.0, temperature 22-28°C); trim affected portions and maintain excellent water quality
CO2 Insufficiency
Slow growth, pale coloration, leaf curling or distortion despite adequate light and nutrients
Install pressurized CO2 system targeting 20-30 ppm; use drop checker to monitor levels; ensure proper diffusion and distribution throughout tank
