Norman's Lampeye
Poropanchax normani
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Procatopodidae
📍 West & Central Africa
Tiny schooling fish with luminous iridescent blue eyes that catch the light beautifully. Excellent for nano planted tanks. Peaceful and undemanding. Looks spectacular in groups of 20+.
Care Guide
Diet
Norman's Lampeyes are omnivores requiring small, high-quality micro foods. Feed high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia once daily in small portions. Supplement with occasional vegetable matter such as blanched spinach to ensure balanced nutrition.
Behavior
These are active, peaceful schooling fish that display their best colors and behavior in groups of 6 or more, ideally 20+. They occupy the top water column, constantly foraging and displaying their characteristic luminous blue eyes. They are non-aggressive and make excellent community fish, though they may be intimidated by larger or boisterous tank mates.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is possible but requires patience and specific conditions. Provide dense vegetation, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-6.5), and temperatures around 24-25°C. Eggs are scattered among plants and hatch in 7-10 days; fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food initially.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful, shares preference for planted tanks and top-to-mid water zones
Comparable size and temperament, peaceful schooling fish with similar water requirements
Tiny, peaceful, shares nano tank preference and similar feeding requirements
Peaceful invertebrate, won't compete for food, adds biological interest to planted setup
Foreground plant that creates ideal habitat structure for schooling and spawning
Dense vegetation provides shelter, spawning sites, and infusoria culture for fry
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, flashing, lethargy, rapid gill movement
Raise temperature gradually to 28-29°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 gallons) or commercial ich treatment; maintain for 10-14 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, remove any sharp decorations, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure good filtration and stable parameters
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, open sores, loss of color, appetite loss, fin damage
Perform 50% water change immediately, treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, maintain pristine water conditions, isolate if possible
Parasitic Infection
Excessive scratching on surfaces, weight loss despite feeding, visible parasites, clamped fins
Use anti-parasitic medication, increase aeration, perform frequent water changes, quarantine affected fish; treat for 7-10 days
