Care Guide
Diet
Ornate Julies are omnivorous and should be fed a varied diet including high-quality micro pellets, small live foods like daphnia and brine shrimp, and vegetable matter. Feed small portions 2-3 times daily, adjusting quantity based on tank bioload. They will also graze on algae and biofilm naturally present in the tank.
Behavior
Ornate Julies are shy, bottom-dwelling cichlids that spend most of their time exploring substrate and rockwork. They are generally peaceful but may show territorial behavior during breeding. They are most active during dawn and dusk, often hiding in caves or dense vegetation during the day.
Breeding
Breeding Ornate Julies is moderately difficult and requires stable water conditions and suitable cave structures. They are monogamous substrate spawners that will lay eggs in caves and guard them fiercely. Fry can be fed infusoria and micro foods once free-swimming.
