Pogostemon Helferi
Pogostemon helferi
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Lamiaceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Pogostemon helferi (Downoi or Little Star) is a distinctive, star-shaped rosette plant from Thailand with deeply ruffled, wavy-edged bright-green leaves radiating from a central crown. It grows low (5–8 cm (2.0–3.2 in)) and is one of the few compact foreground rosette plants with real textural interest. It requires medium to high light and benefits from CO2 and soft, slightly acidic water. Popular in detailed Iwagumi and Nature Aquarium aquascapes.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazer that won't uproot or damage delicate foliage; benefits the planted tank ecosystem
Gentle invertebrate that grazes algae without harming plants; thrives in soft, slightly acidic water matching Downoi's needs
Small, peaceful fish that won't disturb the plant; adds movement without causing damage
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth; creates layered foreground interest
Rhizome plant with comparable care requirements; both thrive in medium-high light and soft water
Complementary foreground plant that creates textural contrast; requires similar lighting and substrate conditions
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency (Iron/Macronutrient)
Yellowing leaves, pale coloration, stunted growth, necrotic spots on new growth
Dose all-in-one fertilizer or macronutrient supplement weekly; ensure substrate is nutrient-rich aquasoil; test water parameters and adjust CO2 if needed
Algae Overgrowth (Green/Black Spot Algae)
Green film or black spots on leaf surfaces; reduced photosynthesis and plant vigor
Increase water changes (30–50% weekly), reduce light duration to 8–10 hours, add algae-eating fish (Otocinclus), manually remove affected leaves, maintain stable CO2 and nutrient balance
Root Rot / Rhizome Decay
Soft, mushy rhizome; foul odor; leaf wilting and detachment; brown discoloration at base
Improve water circulation and substrate aeration; ensure substrate is not compacted; perform 50% water change; remove decayed portions with sterile tools; reduce feeding of fish to lower organic waste
Melting (Leaf Tissue Breakdown)
Rapid leaf dissolution, transparent patches, plant collapse within days of planting
Gradual acclimation to aquatic conditions over 2–3 weeks; maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0–7.0, soft water); ensure adequate light and CO2; avoid drastic water changes
