Red Neon Blue Eye
Pseudomugil luminatus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Pseudomugilidae
📍 Eastern New Guinea
The red neon blue eye is arguably one of the most striking nano fish in the hobby. Males are decorated with vivid orange-red fins edged in black and white, topped with the signature brilliant blue eyes of the genus. It became popular after viral aquascaping videos. Best kept in species or nano setups with very small, calm tankmates.
Care Guide
Diet
Red Neon Blue Eyes are micro predators requiring small live or frozen foods. Offer baby brine shrimp, micro worms, and vinegar eels daily or every other day in small portions. Supplement with high-quality nano pellets and occasional blanched vegetables, feeding only what they consume in 2-3 minutes.
Behavior
Highly active and social fish that must be kept in schools of 8 or more to display natural behavior and reduce stress. Males are territorial within the school but remain peaceful toward other species. They occupy the mid-water column and are most active during dawn and dusk, displaying brilliant coloration when comfortable.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is possible but challenging and rarely achieved by hobbyists. They require pristine water conditions, dense vegetation for egg scattering, and very small live foods for fry. Success requires dedicated setup and patience, as fry are extremely tiny and have high mortality rates.
Tank Mates
Similar water parameters and peaceful temperament; shrimp are too large to be predated upon
Larger shrimp species compatible with nano fish; share similar water chemistry needs
Comparable size and peaceful nature; both prefer soft, slightly acidic water
Tiny, peaceful rasbora with matching water requirements and non-aggressive behavior
Hardy plant providing shelter and cover without being uprooted by these gentle fish
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid gill movement, lethargy, rubbing against surfaces
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt or ich medication; ensure excellent water quality
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fin edges, discoloration at fin bases, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent changes, remove any sharp decorations, treat with antibacterial medication if severe; maintain optimal temperature and parameters
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, open sores, loss of color, torn fins, behavioral changes
Perform 50% water change immediately, treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, isolate if possible; maintain pristine water conditions
Parasitic Infection
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, clamped fins
Use anti-parasitic medication suitable for nano fish, perform frequent water changes, quarantine affected individuals; maintain stable water parameters
