Satanoperca Eartheater

Satanoperca leucosticta

AnimaliaChordataActinopterygii

📍 South America

Ask Finn

A large, peaceful eartheater cichlid from the Guiana Shield region, reaching 10–12 inches, with an attractive silver body covered in small blue-green iridescent spots and a characteristic downturned mouth adapted for sifting substrate. It requires a deep sand bottom in a tank of 75+ gallons and is generally non-aggressive, making it suitable for large peaceful community cichlid setups.

Care Guide

Diet

Satanoperca eartheaters are omnivorous bottom feeders that primarily consume small invertebrates, crustaceans, and plant matter sifted from the substrate. Feed high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia once daily in small portions. Supplement with vegetable matter like blanched zucchini or algae wafers to support their natural foraging behavior.

Behavior

These peaceful cichlids are primarily nocturnal and spend most of their time sifting through the substrate with their characteristic downturned mouths, creating small pits as they feed. They are generally non-aggressive toward other fish but may be territorial with conspecifics; they are best kept in small groups of 4+ or as solitary individuals. They are relatively inactive swimmers and prefer dimly lit environments with plenty of hiding spots.

Breeding

Breeding Satanoperca eartheaters in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require very specific conditions including soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5), stable temperatures around 78-80°F, and large spawning territories with fine sand substrate. Pairs are substrate spawners that guard eggs and fry, but success rates remain low due to their specific environmental demands.

Common Diseases

Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)

Symptoms

White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against substrate

Treatment

Raise temperature gradually to 82°F, perform 25% water changes daily, use ich medication; ensure adequate aeration and maintain water quality

Fin Rot

Symptoms

Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, reduce stocking density, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure sand substrate is clean

Bacterial Infections

Symptoms

Open sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, color fading, torn fins

Treatment

Perform 30% water changes every 2-3 days, maintain optimal water parameters, use broad-spectrum antibacterial treatment; isolate severely affected individuals

Parasitic Infections

Symptoms

Excessive scratching against substrate, weight loss, pale coloration, clamped fins

Treatment

Use anti-parasitic medication appropriate for cichlids, increase water changes, maintain stable temperature; quarantine new fish before introduction
