Shadow Mosura Shrimp
Caridina logemanni
📍 Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos region)
Shadow Mosura Shrimp are a striking freshwater shrimp variety prized for their dark, shadowy coloration and intricate patterning. These are a color morph of Caridina logemanni, known for their peaceful demeanor and algae-grazing behavior. They thrive in established, planted aquariums and are moderately challenging to keep due to their sensitivity to water parameters.
Care Guide
Diet
Shadow Mosura Shrimp are primarily biofilm and algae grazers that benefit from a mature, established tank with plenty of natural food sources. Supplement with high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like spinach and zucchini 2-3 times weekly. Avoid copper-based fertilizers and medications.
Behavior
These shrimp are nocturnal and spend most of their time foraging on substrate and plant surfaces for biofilm and algae. They are social and do best in small groups, displaying minimal aggression toward tank mates. Molting occurs regularly; provide plenty of hiding spots and calcium-rich foods to support healthy shell development.
Breeding
Shadow Mosura Shrimp breed readily in freshwater without brackish larvae stage, making them excellent for home aquariums. Females produce small clutches of 20-30 shrimplets every 4-6 weeks in established tanks. Fry are tiny but will thrive if the tank has abundant biofilm and fine plant matter.
Tank Mates
Similar size and peaceful; both are algae grazers with compatible water parameters
Small, peaceful bottom-dweller; does not prey on shrimp
Tiny, peaceful fish that will not eat adult shrimp; avoid if fry present
Provides grazing surface and shelter; shrimp will not damage it
Dense moss provides biofilm, hiding spots, and breeding grounds
Hardy plant that shrimp will graze on without damaging; provides cover
Common Diseases
Copper Toxicity
Lethargy, loss of color, sudden death, avoidance of food
Perform immediate 50% water change; use copper-free fertilizers and medications; check all supplements for copper content
Molting Issues / Shell Erosion
Difficulty shedding exoskeleton, soft shell, white spots on carapace, lethargy post-molt
Increase calcium intake via blanched vegetables and mineral supplements; ensure pH 6.5-7.0; provide iodine-rich foods; reduce water changes temporarily
Bacterial Infection / Fungus
White fuzz on body, discoloration, lesions, reduced feeding
Perform 25% water change; increase aeration; remove decaying plant matter; use salt baths (1 tsp per gallon, 10-15 minutes) if severe; avoid antibiotics toxic to invertebrates
Parasitic Flukes / Internal Parasites
Rapid gill movement, lethargy, loss of appetite, visible parasites on gills
Quarantine affected shrimp; use invertebrate-safe parasite treatment; maintain pristine water quality; increase temperature slightly to 24-26 C (75-79 F)
