Spotted Head Pinto Shrimp

Caridina logemanni

📍 Taiwan selective breeding

Ask Finn

The Spotted Head Pinto Shrimp is a selectively bred Caridina variety featuring distinctive white or cream-colored spots concentrated on the head and body, creating a striking contrast against a darker base coloration. This pinto pattern makes them highly sought after by enthusiasts who appreciate intricate markings. They are small, peaceful bottom-dwellers ideal for planted nano aquariums.

Care Guide

Diet

Spotted Head Pinto Shrimp are detritivores that graze on biofilm, algae, and decaying plant matter throughout the day. Supplement with high-quality shrimp foods such as Shirakura or Mosura pellets 2-3 times weekly, and offer blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini occasionally. Ensure adequate mineral content through specialized Caridina supplements to support molting and coloration.

Behavior

These shrimp are active grazers that spend most of their time foraging on substrate and plants. They are social and thrive in colonies, exhibiting natural hierarchies without aggression. Molting occurs every 4-6 weeks; provide plenty of hiding spots and leaf litter to support successful molts and reduce stress during vulnerable periods.

Breeding

Spotted Head Pinto Shrimp require soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5, GH 4-6) to breed successfully, as harder water inhibits reproduction. Females produce small batches of 20-30 shrimplets that develop within the mother's saddle; no planktonic larval stage occurs. Offspring are miniature versions of adults and require stable parameters and abundant biofilm for survival.

Common Diseases

Molting Failure / Incomplete Molt

Symptoms

Shrimp unable to shed exoskeleton completely, becoming stuck or dying during molt; lethargy and loss of appetite

Treatment

Increase mineral content through specialized Caridina supplements (GH Booster, Salty Shrimp Mineral); maintain stable pH 5.5-6.5 and adequate calcium; ensure low nitrate levels and perform 25% water changes weekly

Muscular Necrosis (Wobble Disease)

Symptoms

Shrimp exhibit uncoordinated swimming, trembling legs, loss of grip, and eventual paralysis; typically affects newly imported or stressed individuals

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent small water changes; add Indian almond leaves and peat moss for tannins; ensure stable temperature 22-24 C; reduce stress by providing dense vegetation and hiding spots; quarantine affected individuals

Vorticella / Fungal Infection

Symptoms

White fuzzy coating on body or appendages; lethargy; difficulty molting; visible fungal growth on antennae or legs

Treatment

Perform 50% water change and increase aeration; add Indian almond leaves for tannins; maintain pristine water parameters; remove affected shrimp to quarantine if infection spreads; avoid copper-based treatments (lethal to shrimp)

Copper Toxicity

Symptoms

Sudden death or severe lethargy; loss of appetite; discoloration; gill damage; occurs from copper in medications or tap water

Treatment

Use only copper-free medications and supplements; test tap water for copper content; perform immediate 50% water change with RO or distilled water; use activated carbon in filter; do not treat with standard aquarium medications containing copper
