Sulawesi Cardinal Shrimp
Caridina dennerli
Animalia›Arthropoda›Malacostraca›Atyidae
📍 Sulawesi
The Sulawesi Cardinal Shrimp is arguably the most stunning freshwater shrimp — a brilliant red body adorned with white spots, from the ancient alkaline lakes of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is also the most demanding, requiring very warm water, elevated pH, and unique mineral composition mimicking its ancient lake habitat — parameters almost opposite to other Caridina species. It is intolerant of standard aquasoil buffering and must be housed in species-specific setups using Sulawesi mineral salts.
Care Guide
Diet
Sulawesi Cardinals are omnivorous grazers that primarily consume biofilm, algae, and periphyton in their natural habitat. Supplement with high-quality fine powdered shrimp food, spirulina-based pellets, and occasional blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini) 2-3 times weekly. Feed small amounts daily, removing uneaten food within 2 hours to maintain water quality.
Behavior
These shrimp are peaceful, slow-moving grazers that spend most of their time foraging on substrate and hardscape surfaces. They are generally non-aggressive but may be stressed by aggressive tank mates or sudden environmental changes. They exhibit natural schooling behavior and are most confident in groups of 6 or more, displaying vibrant coloration when settled.
Breeding
Breeding Sulawesi Cardinals in captivity is extremely difficult and rarely successful in home aquariums. Females produce very small clutch sizes, and larvae require specialized conditions and foods that are challenging to replicate. Success requires pristine water parameters, stable temperatures, and expert-level husbandry; most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful temperament and algae-grazing behavior; compatible water parameters with careful acclimation
Peaceful but may compete for food; requires separate feeding areas to prevent stress
Excellent algae control partner with identical peaceful nature and minimal bioload
Compatible grazer with no predatory behavior; adds diversity to cleanup crew
Small, peaceful fish that tolerate warm water; avoid overstocking to prevent competition
Common Diseases
Bacterial Infection
Discoloration, lethargy, loss of appetite, visible lesions or fuzzy growth on body
Perform 25% water change immediately, maintain pristine water parameters (0 ammonia/nitrite), increase aeration, and consider antibacterial medication if condition worsens; isolation in hospital tank recommended
Molting Stress/Failed Molt
Inability to shed exoskeleton, lethargy, loss of appetite, death shortly after molt attempt
Ensure adequate calcium and minerals via Sulawesi mineral salts; maintain stable pH 7.5–8.5 and temperature 27–30°C; provide soft plants and hiding spaces; avoid sudden parameter changes
Parasitic Infection
Visible parasites on body, erratic swimming, loss of color, excessive grooming behavior
Quarantine affected individuals; perform gradual water changes to avoid osmotic shock; use species-safe parasite treatments; maintain optimal water quality and temperature
Nutritional Deficiency
Faded coloration, slow growth, lethargy, weak molting
Diversify diet with quality powdered foods, spirulina, and blanched vegetables; ensure biofilm presence via established tank; supplement with calcium-rich foods and maintain stable mineral content via Sulawesi salts
