Taiwan Bee Shrimp

Caridina logemanni

📍 Taiwan

Ask Finn

Taiwan Bee Shrimp are highly prized freshwater shrimp known for their striking black and white banded coloration, making them a favorite among aquascapers and shrimp enthusiasts. These small, peaceful invertebrates are excellent algae grazers and biofilm consumers, thriving in established, well-planted tanks with stable water parameters. They require pristine water conditions and are best kept in species-only or carefully selected community setups.

Care Guide

Diet

Taiwan Bee Shrimp are primarily biofilm and algae grazers that benefit from a mature, established tank with abundant microorganisms. Supplement with high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini), and occasional dried seaweed. Avoid overfeeding; they will naturally consume decaying plant matter and biofilm in the tank.

Behavior

Taiwan Bee Shrimp are sedentary bottom-dwellers that spend most of their time foraging for biofilm and algae on substrate and hardscape. They are social and do best in groups of 10 or more, displaying natural schooling behavior. Molting is frequent and critical; ensure plenty of hiding places and stable water parameters to support successful molts.

Breeding

Taiwan Bee Shrimp breed readily in freshwater without brackish larval stages, making them excellent for home aquariums. Females produce small clutches of 20-30 shrimplets every 4-6 weeks under optimal conditions. Breeding success depends heavily on pristine water quality, stable temperatures, and abundant biofilm; fry are tiny and require microscopic food sources.

Common Diseases

Molting Failure / Incomplete Molt

Symptoms

Shrimp unable to shed exoskeleton completely; stuck in old shell; lethargy and death if untreated

Treatment

Ensure stable water parameters (especially GH and pH); provide iodine supplementation via specialized shrimp mineral additives; maintain pristine water quality with frequent partial water changes

Copper Toxicity

Symptoms

Lethargy, loss of appetite, discoloration, sudden death; shrimp are extremely sensitive to copper

Treatment

Use only copper-free medications and fertilizers; avoid tap water with high copper content; perform large water changes; use activated carbon in filter if copper is suspected

Bacterial Infection / Black Spot Disease

Symptoms

Black or dark spots on body; cloudy appearance on exoskeleton; lethargy and reduced feeding

Treatment

Perform frequent large water changes to improve water quality; increase aeration; remove affected individuals to quarantine if possible; maintain pristine tank conditions; avoid overfeeding

Parasitic Infection (Vorticella / Scutariella)

Symptoms

White fuzzy coating on body and antennae; reduced movement; difficulty molting

Treatment

Perform daily 50% water changes for 1-2 weeks; increase water flow and aeration; maintain optimal water parameters; quarantine affected shrimp if possible; avoid copper-based treatments
