Water Caltrop
Trapa natans
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Myrtales›Lythraceae
📍 Europe and Asia
Unusual floating plant with diamond-shaped surface leaves and feathery submerged leaves. Historically important food plant in Asia.
Tank Mates
Small, peaceful algae-eaters that won't damage delicate plant tissues and benefit from the shade provided
Peaceful schooling fish that thrive under floating plant cover and won't uproot or consume the plant
Excellent algae control without damaging plants; they graze on biofilm and algae around the caltrop
Small, non-destructive shrimp that benefit from the shelter and won't harm the floating plant structure
Peaceful mid-water swimmers that appreciate the shade and cover without being aggressive toward plants
Excellent companion plant that creates layered habitat; both plants benefit from similar nutrient requirements
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, particularly in older leaves
Dose comprehensive liquid fertilizer weekly; test water parameters and adjust macronutrient supplementation based on deficiency type (nitrogen, iron, potassium, etc.)
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating plant surfaces, reduced light penetration, plant decline
Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, perform regular water changes, introduce algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove excess algae
Root Rot / Decay
Mushy stems, foul odor, deteriorating submerged portions, plant collapse
Improve water circulation with aeration, perform partial water changes, remove decaying plant material, ensure adequate nutrient levels and avoid stagnant conditions
Pest Infestation (Snails, Hydra)
Visible pest organisms, plant tissue damage, holes in leaves, reduced growth
Manual removal of pests, quarantine affected plants, introduce predatory fish or shrimp, consider targeted treatments if infestation is severe
