Windelov Java Fern

Microsorum pteropus Windelov

📍 Southeast Asia

Ask Finn

Windelov Java Fern is a delicate, feathery variant of the classic Java Fern with distinctive finely-divided, lacy fronds that create an elegant, almost fern-like appearance. This slow-growing epiphyte is highly valued for its ornamental appeal and ease of care, making it ideal for aquascapers seeking a refined planted look without demanding conditions.

Common Diseases

Rhizome Rot

Symptoms

Soft, blackened rhizome; fronds detach easily; mushy texture at attachment point

Treatment

Ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate; improve water circulation; remove affected portions with sterile scissors; check for excess organic debris accumulation

Leaf Melt / Transition Melt

Symptoms

Fronds become translucent, mushy, or dissolve; occurs after planting or major water parameter changes

Treatment

Maintain stable water conditions (pH, temperature, hardness); reduce light intensity temporarily; ensure good water flow; old leaves will regrow; be patient—melt is usually temporary

Black Beard Algae (BBA) on Fronds

Symptoms

Dark red-to-black fuzzy or brush-like growth on leaf surfaces; fronds appear dirty or spotted

Treatment

Increase water circulation and reduce photoperiod; manually remove affected fronds; dose with liquid carbon or hydrogen peroxide spot treatment; maintain nitrate <20 ppm and phosphate balance

Iron Deficiency / Micronutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

New fronds appear pale or yellowish; older fronds remain green; stunted growth

Treatment

Dose with all-in-one liquid fertilizer or iron supplement 1–2× weekly; ensure adequate lighting for nutrient uptake; test water for existing nutrient levels
