Yellow Assessor
Assessor flavissimus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Perciformes›Plesiopidae
📍 Indonesia
Brilliant yellow cave-dwelling fish that often swims upside down along overhangs. Hardy and reef-safe. Perfect for nano reefs.
Care Guide
Diet
Yellow Assessors are carnivorous and prefer small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, copepods, and small crustaceans. Feed small portions once daily, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes. They may also accept high-quality carnivore pellets and frozen foods, but live prey encourages natural hunting behavior.
Behavior
Yellow Assessors are peaceful, shy fish that spend much of their time hovering near caves, crevices, and overhangs where they characteristically swim upside down along the undersides of rocks and structures. They are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, becoming more active during low-light periods. They are solitary or occur in pairs and do not school, preferring to stay close to shelter.
Breeding
Breeding Yellow Assessors in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require specific cave structures, stable water conditions, and may be territorial during spawning. Little is documented about their reproductive behavior in captivity, making successful breeding a significant challenge even for experienced aquarists.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful temperament and reef-safe; occupies different water column zones
Peaceful invertebrate; may interact with assessor but generally compatible in larger tanks
Non-aggressive; provides cleaning services without competing for food or space
Small, peaceful fish with similar reef-safe requirements and non-aggressive behavior
Congeneric species; may compete for cave space; only in larger tanks with multiple refuges
Common Diseases
Ich (Marine Ich)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, scratching against surfaces, lethargy
Increase water temperature to 26-27°C, maintain excellent water quality, use copper-free treatments or hyposalinity therapy; quarantine affected fish
Bacterial Infections
Torn fins, lesions on body, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, behavioral changes
Improve water quality, perform partial water changes, use antibiotic treatments if severe; ensure adequate nutrition and reduce stressors
Parasitic Infections
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, clamped fins, unusual swimming behavior
Quarantine fish, use appropriate antiparasitic treatments, maintain pristine water conditions; may require copper-based or formalin treatments
Stress-Related Illness
Loss of appetite, hiding excessively, faded coloration, susceptibility to secondary infections
Provide adequate cave structures and hiding places, minimize tank disturbances, maintain stable water parameters, ensure proper feeding
