Albino Corydoras
Corydoras aeneus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Bronze Corydoras · albino
📍 South America
An albino color form of the bronze corydoras, displaying a pale pinkish-white body with red eyes. It shares the same hardy, peaceful temperament as the standard form and thrives in groups of 6 or more on a soft, sandy substrate.
Care Guide
Diet
Albino Corydoras are bottom feeders that consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, and high-quality corydoras-specific foods as their primary diet. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to ensure proper nutrition. Feed small amounts once daily, removing uneaten food after 2-3 hours to maintain water quality.
Behavior
These peaceful catfish are nocturnal and spend most of their time foraging along the substrate, constantly sifting through sand in search of food. They are social fish that thrive in groups of 6 or more, displaying reduced stress and more natural behavior when kept in schools. They are generally inactive during daylight hours but become more active at dawn, dusk, and throughout the night.
Breeding
Breeding Albino Corydoras in captivity is possible but requires specific conditions including cooler water temperatures (around 72°F), frequent water changes, and a well-established tank with plenty of hiding spots. Males will chase females during spawning, and eggs are typically laid on plant leaves or tank glass; remove eggs to a separate rearing tank to prevent predation. Fry are small and require infusoria or liquid fry food initially before graduating to micro pellets.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful temperament, same bottom-dwelling zone, compatible water parameters
Peaceful mid-water swimmers, non-aggressive, thrive in same water conditions
Peaceful invertebrates that occupy different feeding niches; avoid very small shrimplets
Peaceful surface dweller, compatible temperature range, minimal competition for resources
Peaceful bottom dweller with similar water requirements; may occasionally compete for food
Peaceful schooling fish, mid-water swimmers, identical water parameter needs
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, rubbing against substrate, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 79°F, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 gallons) or ich medication; treat for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, fin loss
Improve water quality with frequent water changes, remove decaying food/plants, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure soft substrate to prevent physical damage
Barbel Loss/Erosion
Shortened or missing barbels, difficulty foraging, behavioral changes
Ensure soft, fine sand substrate (not gravel), maintain excellent water quality with regular changes, provide varied diet with quality sinking foods; condition is often irreversible but prevents further damage
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, sores on body, loss of appetite, color fading
Perform 50% water change immediately, maintain pristine water conditions, use broad-spectrum antibacterial medication; isolate severely affected fish to hospital tank
