Anubias Frazeri

Anubias frazeri

📍 West Africa

Ask Finn

Anubias frazeri is a compact, slow-growing rhizome plant featuring deeply lobed, arrow-shaped leaves with a distinctive dark green coloration. It is slightly smaller than Anubias barteri but larger than Anubias nana, making it an excellent choice for midground placement in aquascapes. Like all Anubias species, it is extremely hardy and requires minimal care.

Common Diseases

Rhizome Rot

Symptoms

Soft, blackened rhizome; foul odor; leaf yellowing and melting; plant detaches from hardscape

Treatment

Ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate; improve water circulation; remove affected portions with sterile tools; maintain stable water parameters

Algae on Leaves

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating leaf surfaces; reduced light penetration; stunted growth

Treatment

Gently brush algae off with soft brush or cloth; reduce lighting duration; increase water circulation; add algae-eating shrimp (Amano or Red Cherry); maintain nutrient balance

Leaf Yellowing / Iron Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing of new leaves while veins remain green; older leaves unaffected; slow growth

Treatment

Add liquid iron fertilizer (chelated iron) according to product instructions; ensure adequate micronutrient levels; check for nutrient imbalances

Melting on Transition

Symptoms

Leaves become translucent, mushy, and dissolve; occurs after major water parameter changes or emersed-to-submersed transition

Treatment

Maintain stable water conditions; acclimate slowly if moving from emersed to submersed; trim affected leaves; ensure adequate water circulation and light
