Cryptocoryne Wendtii
Cryptocoryne wendtii
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Araceae
📍 Sri Lanka
Cryptocoryne wendtii is a popular, low-maintenance rosette plant available in several colour forms from green to brown-red. It may undergo 'crypt melt' when first planted or after water chemistry changes, but almost always recovers. Once established it is resilient and spreads via runners.
Tank Mates
Small, peaceful algae grazers that won't damage plant leaves and thrive in similar water parameters
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae without harming plants; prefer the same soft, slightly acidic water
Tiny, peaceful fish that school in open water while the plant provides shelter and shade
Complementary foreground plant with similar nutrient requirements and low-light tolerance
Hardy companion plant with identical care needs; both thrive in low to medium light without CO2
Peaceful dwarf cichlid that appreciates planted tanks; may occasionally uproot plants while foraging
Common Diseases
Crypt Melt
Rapid leaf yellowing, blackening, and deterioration; leaves dissolve or fall away within days to weeks
Maintain stable water parameters (pH, temperature, hardness); avoid drastic changes; ensure adequate lighting and nutrient supplementation; affected leaves will regrow once conditions stabilize
Nutrient Deficiency
Pale or yellowing leaves, stunted growth, weak or translucent new growth, loss of vibrant coloration
Add root tabs beneath the substrate; dose liquid fertilizers containing macronutrients (N, P, K) and micronutrients (iron, boron); perform regular water changes to replenish trace minerals
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green, brown, or black algae coating leaf surfaces; reduced light penetration to plant tissue
Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily; increase water circulation; manually remove algae with a soft brush; introduce algae-eating fish like Otocinclus or shrimp; avoid excess nutrients that fuel algae
Root Rot
Mushy, blackened roots; foul odor from substrate; plant fails to anchor or shows severe decline despite adequate light
Improve substrate drainage and water circulation; reduce organic debris accumulation; perform partial water changes; consider replanting in fresh substrate with root tabs; ensure temperature remains within 22–28 °C
