Anubias barteri Wrinkle Leaf

📍 West Africa

Ask Finn

Anubias Wrinkle Leaf is a compact variety of Anubias barteri featuring distinctively textured, deeply wrinkled dark green leaves that create an attractive, sculptural appearance. Its unique leaf texture and small to medium size make it a striking accent plant for aquascaping.

Common Diseases

Rhizome Rot

Symptoms

Soft, mushy rhizome; dark discoloration; foul odor; leaf yellowing and melting

Treatment

Ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate; improve water circulation; remove affected portions with sterile tools; increase water changes

Algae Overgrowth on Leaves

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating leaf surfaces; reduced light penetration to leaf tissue

Treatment

Manually remove algae with soft brush; reduce lighting duration; increase water flow; add algae-eating shrimp (Amano or Red Cherry); maintain nutrient balance

Leaf Melt / Transition Shock

Symptoms

Older leaves yellowing and dissolving; new growth appears healthy; occurs after major water changes or tank setup

Treatment

Maintain stable water parameters; perform gradual acclimation; ensure consistent lighting; be patient—plant will recover in 2-4 weeks

Nutrient Deficiency (Iron / Micronutrients)

Symptoms

Yellowing of new leaves while veins remain green; stunted growth; pale appearance

Treatment

Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer (e.g., Thrive, EasyLife) 1-2x weekly; ensure adequate bioload from fish waste; test and adjust macronutrient balance
