Banana Plant
Nymphoides aquatica
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Menyanthaceae
📍 North America
The banana plant is named for its distinctive cluster of banana-shaped storage roots at the base. It sends up floating leaves and white flowers when mature. It is an unusual, undemanding midground plant that does not require substrate planting — it can float freely.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae eaters that won't damage plant tissue and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, peaceful schooling fish that provide movement without uprooting or damaging plants
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae and won't harm the plant; excellent for planted tanks
Complementary foreground plant that creates layered aquascaping with banana plant's midground presence
Hardy companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and undemanding care requirements
Peaceful dwarf cichlid that won't uproot plants; requires stable water parameters similar to banana plant
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, particularly in older leaves
Increase fertilization frequency with all-in-one liquid fertilizers or root tabs; ensure adequate macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and micronutrients (iron, boron, manganese)
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating leaves and tubers, reduced light penetration, plant appears smothered
Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove excess algae with soft brush
Root Rot
Mushy, blackened tubers, foul odor, plant fails to produce new growth, leaves wilt despite adequate water
Improve water circulation and reduce organic debris; perform partial water changes; remove severely affected tubers if possible; ensure substrate is not compacted or anaerobic
Leaf Melt
Rapid deterioration of leaves, transparent patches, leaves dissolving or becoming translucent
Acclimate plant gradually to new tank conditions; maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5, temperature 20-28°C); ensure adequate lighting and nutrient availability
