Java Fern
Microsorum pteropus
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Polypodiaceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Java fern is one of the most forgiving aquatic plants, thriving under low light without CO2 injection. It must be attached to hardscape rather than planted in substrate, as burying the rhizome will cause it to rot. New plantlets emerge from the edges of mature leaves, making propagation effortless.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage fern fronds and benefit from the plant's shelter
Small, non-destructive shrimp that graze on algae and biofilm without harming the plant
Gentle algae-eating fish that won't uproot or damage the fern's delicate structure
Small, peaceful schooling fish that provide activity without disturbing the plant
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements and low-light tolerance
Foreground plant that complements Java fern's midground placement and creates layered aquascaping
Common Diseases
Rhizome Rot
Blackening or mushy rhizome, leaf yellowing, plant deterioration despite good water conditions
Ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate; tie plant to hardscape above substrate level. Improve water circulation and reduce organic buildup. Remove affected portions with sterile tools if necessary.
Algae Overgrowth on Fronds
Green, brown, or black algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced light penetration to plant tissue
Gently brush algae off fronds with a soft brush or cloth. Reduce light duration to 8-10 hours daily and increase water circulation. Add algae-eating shrimp or fish like Amano shrimp or Otocinclus.
Nutrient Deficiency
Pale or yellowing new growth, stunted development, transparent or thin leaves
Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer (containing macronutrients and micronutrients) 1-2 times weekly. Ensure adequate fish waste or consider adding root tabs if using heavily planted tanks.
Melting
Sudden leaf dissolution or transparency, rapid tissue breakdown after planting
Ensure proper attachment to hardscape (not buried). Maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0-8.0, temperature 20-28°C). Improve water circulation and reduce stress from sudden environmental changes.
