Bird's Nest Coral
Seriatopora hystrix
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Pocilloporidae
📍 Indo-Pacific reef crests
Delicate branching SPS with thin, pointed branches arranged like a bird's nest. One of the fastest-growing SPS corals — ideal for fragging. Available in pink, purple, green, and yellow morphs.
Tank Mates
Reef-safe fish that won't damage coral; compatible with high-flow SPS environments
Beneficial reef inhabitant; won't harm coral and maintains water quality
Reef-safe and adds activity; may occasionally disturb loose coral fragments
Small, reef-safe fish that won't damage delicate branches
Algae grazer that won't harm coral; helps maintain water quality
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, polyps fail to extend, tissue becomes pale or white
Reduce light intensity temporarily, check water parameters (temp, salinity, nutrients), improve water flow, and ensure stable conditions. Perform partial water changes and avoid sudden environmental shifts.
Brown Jelly Disease
Brown, slimy tissue sloughing off; rapid tissue loss; foul odor
Isolate affected coral immediately, perform 50% water change, increase water flow and aeration, and consider antibiotic dips. Remove dead tissue with a clean pipette and monitor closely.
Algae Overgrowth
Filamentous or coralline algae covering branches, polyps unable to extend
Reduce nutrient levels (phosphate, nitrate), increase water flow, manually remove algae, and introduce algae-eating snails. Consider UV sterilization or algae scrubbing.
Tissue Necrosis
Localized tissue death, white band spreading from base, polyp recession
Improve water quality and stability, increase calcium and alkalinity, enhance water flow, and remove affected branches if necessary. Maintain optimal lighting and temperature.
