Black Sailfin Molly
Poecilia latipinna
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Molly · black sailfin
📍 Southeast United States
A variety of the sailfin molly combining solid black coloration with the large, sail-like dorsal fin characteristic of Poecilia latipinna males. Males display the impressive dorsal fin during courtship; this variety thrives in hard, slightly alkaline water and tolerates mild brackish conditions.
Care Guide
Diet
Black Sailfin Mollies are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake foods, small pellets, and regular supplements of blanched vegetables like spinach and zucchini. Feed frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia 2-3 times weekly to support color development and fin growth. Provide small amounts of algae-based foods or spirulina to round out their nutrition, feeding once daily in portions they can consume within 2-3 minutes.
Behavior
These peaceful, active fish spend most of their time in mid-water zones, displaying characteristic darting movements and social interactions within their school. Males are notably territorial during breeding season and will display their impressive sail-like dorsal fins to establish dominance and attract females. They are hardy, curious fish that adapt well to established tanks and often interact with their environment and tank mates.
Breeding
Black Sailfin Mollies are livebearers that breed readily in captivity when water conditions are stable and temperatures remain above 75°F. Females produce 20-100 fry every 4-6 weeks; provide dense vegetation or breeding boxes to protect newborns from predation by adults. Breeding is not difficult but requires adequate space and regular water changes to manage population growth.

Common Diseases
Fin Rot
Frayed, disintegrating dorsal and tail fins; white or black edges on fin tissue
Improve water quality with frequent partial changes, treat with aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or antibacterial medication if severe
Ich (White Spot Disease)
Small white spots covering body and fins; fish rub against objects; rapid breathing
Raise temperature gradually to 82-84°F, treat with ich medication following label directions, perform daily 25% water changes
Popeye (Exophthalmia)
One or both eyes bulging outward; eye cloudiness or hemorrhaging
Perform immediate 50% water change, check water parameters, treat with antibacterial medication if caused by infection
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body; lethargy; rapid gill movement; fish scratching
Increase aeration, treat with copper-based medication or salt bath, maintain temperature at 78-80°F, perform daily water changes
