Fancy Guppy
Poecilia reticulata
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Guppy · fancy
📍 South America
The "fancy" designation refers to selectively bred guppies with exaggerated fin shapes (veil, delta, halfmoon) and a wide variety of color strains, developed through generations of selective breeding. Males are strikingly colorful with flowing tails while females are larger and plainer; they are among the easiest livebearers to keep and breed, suitable for community tanks of 10+ gallons.
Care Guide
Diet
Fancy guppies are omnivorous and thrive on high-quality flake foods supplemented with small frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms 2-3 times weekly. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes, as overfeeding degrades water quality. Occasional vegetable matter like blanched spinach supports digestive health.
Behavior
Fancy guppies are peaceful, active swimmers that spend most time in the upper water column, displaying their elaborate fins through constant movement. Males are highly social and often interact with each other through fin displays, while females are more reserved; males may harass females during breeding season. They are curious and interactive with their environment, making them engaging community fish.
Breeding
Fancy guppies breed readily in captivity without special conditioning, as they are livebearers that produce 20-50 fry every 4-6 weeks. Females can store sperm and produce multiple broods from a single mating, making population control important in established tanks. Fry are large enough to eat standard fry foods immediately and grow quickly in warm, well-fed conditions.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and identical water parameter requirements make them ideal community companions
Peaceful algae eaters that occupy the bottom zone and won't compete with or harass guppies
Peaceful invertebrates that help control algae and detritus without threatening fry or adults
Compatible water parameters and peaceful nature, though slightly smaller and may be nipped by aggressive male guppies
Peaceful and similar water requirements, though males can be territorial; provide adequate space and hiding spots
Bottom-dwelling catfish that clean substrate without competing for food or space with guppies
Common Diseases
Fin Rot
Fraying, discoloration, or deterioration of fin edges; often starts at tail tips and progresses toward body
Perform 25% water changes every 2-3 days, improve water quality, and treat with aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or antibacterial medication if severe
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots resembling salt grains on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against objects, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C (82-86°F), treat with aquarium salt or ich-specific medication, and perform daily 25% water changes for 10-14 days
Velvet Disease (Oodinium)
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, clamped fins, rapid gill movement, loss of appetite
Increase aeration, treat with copper-based medication or aquarium salt, dim lighting to reduce stress, and maintain 28°C (82°F) temperature
Dropsy
Severe bloating, scales standing out like a pinecone, lethargy, loss of appetite, pale coloration
Isolate affected fish, perform frequent water changes, treat with antibacterial medication, and provide high-quality food; prognosis is often poor if advanced
