Bolbitis Difformis
Bolbitis difformis
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Dryopteridaceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Sometimes sold as 'Baby Bolbitis' or 'Mini Bolbitis', this small aquatic fern produces deeply divided fronds similar to the full-size Bolbitis heudelotii but significantly more compact and fine-textured. It attaches to driftwood and rock and grows well in moderate flow. One of the finest detail ferns in the hobby for Iwagumi and Nature Aquarium style.
Tank Mates
Gentle algae grazers that will not damage delicate fronds and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, peaceful shrimp that browse algae without harming the plant's fine foliage
Peaceful bottom feeders that respect plants and help control algae on hardscape
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth rate; both attach to hardscape
Compatible low-light plant that creates a natural, detailed aquascape when combined with Mini Bolbitis
Small, peaceful schooling fish that won't uproot or damage the delicate fern
Common Diseases
Rhizome Rot
Blackening or softening of the rhizome, visible decay, frond loss, mushy texture when touched
Improve water circulation and reduce organic buildup; perform partial water changes; remove affected portions of rhizome with sterile tools; ensure substrate is not compacted around the plant
Algae Overgrowth (Black Beard Algae)
Dark, hair-like algae coating fronds and rhizome, reduced photosynthesis, plant decline
Increase water circulation, reduce light duration to 8-10 hours daily, perform manual removal with a soft brush, introduce algae-eating shrimp (Amano or Red Cherry), or use targeted spot treatments with hydrogen peroxide
Nutrient Deficiency
Pale or yellowing fronds, stunted growth, transparent or thin new leaves
Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer 1-2 times weekly; ensure adequate macro and micronutrients; consider adding CO2 supplementation; perform regular water changes to maintain nutrient balance
Melting
Rapid frond deterioration, transparent or dissolving leaves, overall plant collapse
Acclimate slowly to new tank conditions over 2-3 weeks; maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5, temperature 22-28°C); ensure adequate light and water circulation; avoid sudden changes in CO2 or fertilization
