Asian Water Fern

Bolbitis heteroclita

PlantaeTracheophytaPolypodiopsidaPolypodialesDryopteridaceae

📍 Southeast Asia

Ask Finn

Asian relative of the African Water Fern. Smaller with more compact, lobed fronds. Grows attached to hardscape in flowing water.

Common Diseases

Rhizome Rot

Symptoms

Blackening or softening of the rhizoid attachment point, fronds yellowing and dying back from the base

Treatment

Improve water circulation and reduce organic buildup; ensure the rhizome is not buried in substrate; perform partial water changes and consider adding an air stone for better oxygenation

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing fronds, stunted growth, pale or translucent new leaves, loss of the lobed frond structure

Treatment

Dose with comprehensive liquid fertilizer containing macronutrients and micronutrients; increase water change frequency; consider adding root tabs if using nutrient-poor substrate

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating fronds, reduced light penetration, fronds becoming obscured

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily; increase water flow around the plant; introduce algae-eating fish or shrimp; manually remove algae with a soft brush

Melting

Symptoms

Fronds becoming translucent, dissolving, or turning to mush despite healthy appearance initially

Treatment

Ensure stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5, GH 4-8); acclimate slowly to new tank conditions; maintain consistent temperature; improve water circulation and oxygenation
