Chinese Hillstream Loach
Pseudogastromyzon myersi
📍 Southeast Asia (Southern China)
Pseudogastromyzon myersi, the Chinese Hillstream Loach, is a fascinating and highly adapted fish from fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams in China. It possesses a flattened body and modified pectoral and pelvic fins that act as a suction cup, allowing it to cling to rocks in strong currents. They are popular in aquariums for their unique appearance and their ability to graze algae from hard surfaces.

Care Guide
Diet
Chinese Hillstream Loaches are primarily herbivores that graze constantly on biofilm, algae, and aufwuchs growing on rocks and glass. Supplement their diet with sinking algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched zucchini or cucumber, and occasional small sinking pellets. Feed once or twice daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom and that there is sufficient biofilm growth in the tank.
Behavior
These loaches are active, curious fish that spend most of their time clinging to and crawling over rocks, glass, and driftwood in search of biofilm and algae. They are generally peaceful but males can be mildly territorial with one another, so providing ample space and visual breaks reduces conflict. They thrive in groups of three or more and are most active in well-oxygenated, high-flow environments.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is possible but considered moderately challenging, requiring very clean, highly oxygenated water with strong flow and a mature tank rich in biofilm. Males will court females by nudging and following them, and eggs are deposited in fine substrate or gravel crevices. The fry are tiny and require infusoria or very fine foods initially, making successful rearing difficult.
Tank Mates
Shares preference for cool, well-oxygenated water and is peaceful and non-competitive
Same habitat requirements and peaceful temperament; ensure adequate space for males
Active, peaceful fish that tolerate similar cooler temperatures and high flow
Shares hillstream habitat preferences and peaceful nature; both graze biofilm
Peaceful schooling fish that can tolerate similar water parameters
Small, peaceful loach with similar cool water and high-flow preferences
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
Small white spots resembling salt grains on body, fins, and gills; flashing and scratching against surfaces
Gradually raise temperature to 24 C if tolerated, treat with ich-specific medication; hillstream loaches are sensitive to some medications so use half doses cautiously
Velvet (Oodinium)
Fine gold or rust-colored dust on skin, rapid gill movement, lethargy, loss of appetite
Dim lighting, treat with copper-based medication at reduced dose; ensure high oxygenation during treatment
Bacterial Infection (Columnaris/Fin Rot)
Frayed or disintegrating fins, white or gray patches on body, ulcers, lethargy
Improve water quality immediately, treat with broad-spectrum antibacterial medication such as kanamycin or nitrofurazone
Oxygen Deprivation / Stress
Gasping at surface, lethargy, loss of grip on surfaces, pale coloration
Not a disease but a husbandry issue; increase surface agitation, add a powerhead or airstone, perform a water change to restore dissolved oxygen levels
