Clown Pleco
Panaque maccus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Loricariidae
📍 Venezuela & Colombia
The Clown Pleco is a small, attractively patterned plecostomus with bold yellow-and-black tiger-stripe markings on a compact 8–10 cm (3.2–3.9 in) body, making it one of the most manageable pleco species for community tanks. Unlike most plecos it is primarily a wood eater (xylivore) and must have driftwood available to gnaw on. It is a cavity dweller that benefits from PVC pipes or hollow wood to use as territory.
Care Guide
Diet
Clown Plecos are primarily wood-eaters (xylivores) and must have driftwood available at all times to rasp on for nutrition and digestion. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber), and occasional sinking pellets 3-4 times weekly. They are not aggressive algae eaters like other plecos, so relying solely on algae in the tank is insufficient.
Behavior
Clown Plecos are nocturnal, bottom-dwelling fish that spend most daylight hours hiding in caves or under driftwood. They are peaceful and solitary, though males may become territorial toward other plecos if space is limited. They are relatively inactive during the day but become more active at night when foraging for food.
Breeding
Breeding Clown Plecos in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require specific cave-spawning conditions, stable water parameters, and large territories. Successful breeding typically requires professional breeding setups with multiple caves and minimal disturbance.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful bottom-dwellers with compatible water requirements
Peaceful mid-water dweller; avoid if pleco becomes territorial
Peaceful schooling fish that occupy upper water column
Small, peaceful, and prefer similar warm water conditions
Peaceful invertebrate; pleco may occasionally nibble but generally compatible
Small and peaceful; provide hiding spots to prevent predation
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, flashing against surfaces, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 28-29°C, perform 25% water changes daily, use aquarium salt or ich medication; ensure adequate aeration
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Perform 50% water change, improve water quality, add aquarium salt, treat with antibacterial medication if severe; check for sharp decorations
Bacterial Infection
Open sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, color fading
Isolate if possible, perform frequent water changes, treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication; maintain optimal water parameters
Malnutrition/Wood Deficiency
Weight loss, lethargy, stunted growth, digestive issues
Ensure driftwood is always available for rasping; supplement with quality algae wafers and vegetables; provide varied diet
