Care Guide
Diet
Emerald Dwarf Rasboras are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, small flake foods, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small portions once daily, offering only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement with vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or algae-based foods to support their overall health.
Behavior
These tiny, peaceful fish are highly social and must be kept in schools of at least 8 individuals to feel secure and display natural schooling behavior. They are somewhat shy and prefer densely planted tanks where they can dart between vegetation while remaining visible. They occupy the mid-water column and are most active during dawn and dusk, showing beautiful iridescent blue-green coloration when comfortable.
Breeding
Breeding Emerald Dwarf Rasboras in captivity is challenging and rarely achieved by hobbyists. They require very specific conditions including soft, acidic water (pH 6.0-6.5), dense vegetation for egg scattering, and cooler temperatures around 22-24°C. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food for the first week before accepting micro foods.
Tank Mates
Peaceful bottom-dweller that shares similar water preferences and won't compete with rasboras
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and compatible water parameters make them ideal companions
Peaceful invertebrate that occupies different zones; ensure adequate vegetation for shrimp safety
Peaceful, similar water temperature preference; monitor for any territorial behavior
Hardy plant that provides shelter and security for shy rasboras without being uprooted
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt or ich medication; treat for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, reduce stocking density, use antibacterial medication if severe
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, loss of color, open sores, torn fins, behavioral changes
Perform 50% water change immediately, maintain pristine water conditions, use broad-spectrum antibiotic medication if needed
Stress-Related Illness
Fading color, hiding, loss of appetite, erratic swimming
Ensure school size of at least 8, increase plant density for security, maintain stable water parameters and cooler temperatures
