Concolor Corydoras

Corydoras concolor

AnimaliaChordataActinopterygii

📍 South America

Ask Finn

A uniformly colored corydoras from Venezuela and the upper Orinoco, featuring a plain slate-grey to bronze body without distinct markings — hence the name 'concolor' (same color). It is peaceful and social, requiring a group of 6+ on a soft sandy substrate with well-maintained, oxygenated water.

Care Guide

Diet

Concolor Corydoras are bottom feeders that consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, and high-quality corydoras-specific foods as their primary diet. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to ensure proper nutrition and encourage natural foraging behavior. Feed small amounts that reach the substrate, as they rarely compete for food at the water column.

Behavior

These peaceful catfish are nocturnal and crepuscular, spending most of their time sifting through the substrate in search of food using their sensitive barbels. They are highly social and must be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals to exhibit natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. They are generally inactive during the day but become more active during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours.

Breeding

Breeding Concolor Corydoras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved by hobbyists. Successful breeding requires pristine water conditions, cooler temperatures (around 72°F), and a well-established group with proper conditioning. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food, making rearing challenging without specialized setup.

Common Diseases

Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)

Symptoms

White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, rubbing against substrate

Treatment

Raise temperature gradually to 79°F, perform daily water changes, use ich medication; ensure good aeration as corydoras are sensitive to low oxygen

Barbel Erosion

Symptoms

Shortened or missing barbels, difficulty feeding, behavioral changes

Treatment

Improve substrate quality by using fine sand instead of gravel; maintain excellent water quality with frequent changes; provide varied diet with quality foods

Fin Rot

Symptoms

Frayed or disintegrating fins, lethargy, loss of appetite

Treatment

Perform 50% water changes every 2-3 days, maintain pristine water conditions, use antibacterial medication if severe; remove any sharp substrate or decorations

Dropsy

Symptoms

Bloated abdomen, pinecone-like scales, lethargy, loss of appetite

Treatment

Isolate affected fish, perform frequent water changes, provide high-quality foods; unfortunately often fatal; maintain excellent water quality to prevent occurrence
