Cryptocoryne Beckettii
Cryptocoryne beckettii
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Araceae
📍 South Asia
Cryptocoryne Beckettii is a compact, adaptable crypt producing wavy-edged leaves that range from olive-green on the upper surface to pink-brown or purple on the underside — colouration intensifying under brighter light. It is among the most forgiving crypts, tolerating harder and more alkaline water than most of its relatives. A reliable midground plant for low-tech community tanks.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't uproot or damage delicate crypt leaves
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae without disturbing plant structure
Small, peaceful schooling fish that provide visual interest without harming plants
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth rate
Complementary foreground/midground plant that thrives in identical low-tech conditions
Calm, small fish that rarely uproot plants; provide adequate space to prevent aggression
Common Diseases
Crypt Rot (Rhizome Decay)
Blackening or mushy rhizome, foul odor, rapid leaf melt despite stable conditions
Remove affected plant, trim decayed tissue with sterile scissors, replant in fresh substrate with improved water circulation and reduced organic buildup; increase water changes
Nutrient Deficiency (Iron/Macronutrients)
Yellowing new leaves, stunted growth, pale or translucent foliage despite adequate light
Dose all-in-one fertilizer or macronutrient supplements (NPK) weekly; test water parameters and ensure substrate contains root tabs; improve lighting if below 20 PAR
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced photosynthesis, plant decline
Manually remove algae with soft brush or cloth; reduce photoperiod to 6-8 hours daily; increase water circulation; add algae-eating fish (Otocinclus) or shrimp; avoid excess nutrients
Melting (Emersion Shock)
Rapid leaf dissolution and browning within days of introduction, though rhizome remains firm
This is normal acclimation; maintain stable parameters (pH 6.0–8.0, temp 22–28°C); do not remove plant; new growth will emerge within 2-4 weeks as plant adapts
