Common Diseases

Cryptocoryne Rot (Melt)

Symptoms

Leaves turn translucent, mushy, and dissolve; plant appears to deteriorate rapidly after introduction

Treatment

Maintain stable water parameters (temperature, pH, hardness); perform 25% water changes; remove affected leaves; ensure adequate water circulation without direct flow on plant

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, loss of leaf color and vibrancy

Treatment

Dose all-in-one fertilizer or macronutrient supplements (NPK); add root tabs if substrate is inert; increase lighting slightly to support photosynthesis

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced light penetration, plant appears smothered

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily; perform water changes; introduce algae-eating fish (Otocinclus) or shrimp; manually remove algae with soft brush

Black Beard Algae (BBA)

Symptoms

Dark red or black fuzzy growth on leaf tips and edges, plant appears weakened

Treatment

Increase water circulation; reduce photoperiod; dose liquid carbon (glutaraldehyde) or hydrogen peroxide spot treatment; manually remove affected leaves; ensure adequate CO2 if using pressurized system
