Cryptocoryne Wendtii Brown
Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Brown'
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Alismatales›Araceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Classic brown variant of C. wendtii with bronze-brown ruffled leaves. One of the most popular and beginner-friendly crypts.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage plant leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, non-aggressive fish that appreciate plant cover for shelter and won't uproot or damage the crypt
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae and won't harm the plant; benefit from plant cover
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements and low-light tolerance
Compatible low-light plant that creates a lush planted aesthetic alongside Cryptocoryne
Peaceful fish that appreciate plant cover; generally won't damage established crypts
Common Diseases
Crypt Rot
Leaves become translucent, mushy, or dissolve; stems blacken and decay; plant collapses
Remove affected leaves immediately, improve water circulation, reduce organic waste buildup, ensure adequate substrate nutrients, and maintain stable water parameters. May require partial water changes and substrate cleaning
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or pitting
Add all-in-one liquid fertilizer or macronutrient supplements weekly. Ensure substrate contains nutrient-rich material. Test and adjust iron and micronutrient levels if deficiency persists
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced light penetration, plant appears smothered
Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, perform partial water changes, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove excess algae, and improve water circulation
Melting (Emersion Shock)
Sudden leaf deterioration after planting, leaves become transparent and dissolve
This is normal when transitioning from emersed to submersed form. Maintain stable conditions and be patient—new submersed leaves will grow within 2-4 weeks. Ensure adequate lighting and nutrients during recovery
