Delphax Corydoras
Corydoras delphax
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
📍 South America
A false corydoras from the Inírida and Negro river systems in Colombia and Venezuela, featuring a spotted pattern on a pale body and often confused with other similar Corydoras species. Peaceful and social, it should be kept in groups of 6+ on fine sand with soft, acidic to neutral water.
Care Guide
Diet
Delphax Corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders that primarily consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, and fine-grained foods. Supplement with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia 2-3 times weekly. Feed small amounts once daily, ensuring food reaches the substrate where they forage.
Behavior
These peaceful catfish are highly social and must be kept in groups of at least 6 to exhibit natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. They spend most of their time on the substrate sifting through sand for food, occasionally rising to mid-water. They are nocturnal and most active during low-light periods, showing minimal aggression toward tankmates.
Breeding
Breeding Delphax Corydoras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. Successful breeding requires pristine water conditions, cooler temperatures (around 72°F), and plenty of hiding spaces with fine sand substrate. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food for initial nutrition.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and compatible water parameters; both are bottom feeders that don't compete aggressively
Small, peaceful mid-water swimmers that won't disturb bottom-dwelling corydoras; thrive in identical soft, acidic water
Peaceful schooling fish preferring soft, acidic water; occupy mid-water column without competing for bottom space
Peaceful and small enough to coexist safely; prefer similar warm, slightly acidic conditions
Peaceful invertebrates that share bottom habitat; won't prey on adult corydoras and help maintain water quality
Closely related species with identical care requirements; can be kept together in mixed corydoras groups of 6+
Common Diseases
Barbel Erosion
Deterioration or loss of barbels (whisker-like sensory organs); reduced bottom-feeding activity
Improve water quality immediately, perform frequent water changes, and ensure fine sand substrate; avoid sharp gravel that damages barbels
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 79°F, perform daily water changes, and treat with ich medication; ensure adequate aeration
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges
Perform 50% water changes every 2-3 days, maintain pristine water conditions, and treat with antibacterial medication if severe
Bacterial Infection
Open sores, cloudy eyes, lethargy, loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish, perform frequent water changes, and treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication
