Eel Loach
Pangio anguillaris
📍 Southeast Asia
The Eel Loach (Pangio anguillaris) is a slender, eel-like loach native to Southeast Asia, prized for its unique elongated body and peaceful nature. It is closely related to the Kuhli Loach and shares similar burrowing behaviors, making it a fascinating addition to community aquariums. This species thrives in groups and is most active during twilight and nighttime hours.

Care Guide
Diet
Eel Loaches are omnivores that do best with a varied diet of sinking foods such as micro pellets, sinking wafers, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and tubifex worms. Feed once or twice daily, preferably in the evening when they are most active. They will also scavenge leftover food from the substrate, helping to keep the tank clean.
Behavior
Eel Loaches are shy, nocturnal fish that spend most of their time burrowing into soft substrate or hiding among dense vegetation and leaf litter. They are highly social and should be kept in groups of six or more, as solitary individuals tend to be stressed and rarely seen. In groups, they become more active and can often be observed weaving through plants and substrate together.
Breeding
Breeding Eel Loaches in captivity is considered rare and difficult, with very few documented successes in home aquariums. Spawning may be triggered by simulating the onset of the rainy season through water changes with slightly cooler, softer water. Eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants near the surface, and the parents do not provide any care for the eggs or fry.
Tank Mates
Same genus and similar habitat requirements; coexist peacefully and encourage natural behavior
Tiny, peaceful upper-level fish that won't compete with bottom-dwelling Eel Loaches
Small, peaceful schooling fish that occupy different water levels and share similar soft water preferences
Peaceful bottom dwellers that share similar water parameters; minimal competition
Small, peaceful gourami that prefers soft acidic water matching Eel Loach requirements
Peaceful nano fish that occupy mid to upper levels, leaving the bottom for Eel Loaches
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
Small white spots resembling grains of salt on the body and fins, flashing against surfaces, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, treat with ich-specific medication; use half doses as loaches are scaleless and sensitive to medications
Skin Flukes (Gyrodactylus)
Excessive mucus production, scratching against objects, reddened or irritated skin, lethargy
Treat with praziquantel-based medication at reduced doses; improve water quality and perform frequent water changes
Bacterial Infection (Columnaris/Fin Rot)
Frayed or disintegrating fins, white or grayish patches on skin, ulcers, lethargy
Improve water quality immediately; treat with antibacterial medication such as kanamycin or nitrofurazone at reduced doses appropriate for scaleless fish
Internal Parasites
Wasting despite eating, bloated abdomen, stringy white feces, lethargy
Treat with fenbendazole or metronidazole added to food or water; quarantine affected fish and maintain pristine water conditions
