Care Guide

Diet

Eel Loaches are omnivores that do best with a varied diet of sinking foods such as micro pellets, sinking wafers, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and tubifex worms. Feed once or twice daily, preferably in the evening when they are most active. They will also scavenge leftover food from the substrate, helping to keep the tank clean.

Behavior

Eel Loaches are shy, nocturnal fish that spend most of their time burrowing into soft substrate or hiding among dense vegetation and leaf litter. They are highly social and should be kept in groups of six or more, as solitary individuals tend to be stressed and rarely seen. In groups, they become more active and can often be observed weaving through plants and substrate together.

Breeding

Breeding Eel Loaches in captivity is considered rare and difficult, with very few documented successes in home aquariums. Spawning may be triggered by simulating the onset of the rainy season through water changes with slightly cooler, softer water. Eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants near the surface, and the parents do not provide any care for the eggs or fry.

Common Diseases

Ich (White Spot Disease)

Symptoms

Small white spots resembling grains of salt on the body and fins, flashing against surfaces, lethargy

Treatment

Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, treat with ich-specific medication; use half doses as loaches are scaleless and sensitive to medications

Skin Flukes (Gyrodactylus)

Symptoms

Excessive mucus production, scratching against objects, reddened or irritated skin, lethargy

Treatment

Treat with praziquantel-based medication at reduced doses; improve water quality and perform frequent water changes

Bacterial Infection (Columnaris/Fin Rot)

Symptoms

Frayed or disintegrating fins, white or grayish patches on skin, ulcers, lethargy

Treatment

Improve water quality immediately; treat with antibacterial medication such as kanamycin or nitrofurazone at reduced doses appropriate for scaleless fish

Internal Parasites

Symptoms

Wasting despite eating, bloated abdomen, stringy white feces, lethargy

Treatment

Treat with fenbendazole or metronidazole added to food or water; quarantine affected fish and maintain pristine water conditions
