Kuhli Loach
Pangio kuhlii
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cobitidae
📍 Malay Peninsula, Java & Sumatra
The Kuhli Loach is an eel-like, nocturnal loach from Southeast Asia with alternating yellow-orange and dark-brown banding. It wriggles through substrate and around plant roots searching for food, making it a fascinating and useful bottom-level scavenger. Kuhli Loaches are social and do best in groups of five or more; lone individuals are shy and rarely seen. Fine sand is essential to protect their sensitive underbellies.
Care Guide
Diet
Kuhli Loaches are omnivorous bottom feeders that consume sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, micro worms, and detritus. Feed small amounts 2-3 times weekly, as they are nocturnal and will forage throughout the substrate at night. Supplement with blanched vegetables like zucchini to ensure balanced nutrition.
Behavior
Kuhli Loaches are nocturnal and shy, spending most daylight hours hidden in substrate or plants. They are highly social and must be kept in groups of 5 or more; solitary individuals rarely emerge and become stressed. They constantly wriggle through sand searching for food, making them fascinating to observe during feeding times and evening hours.
Breeding
Breeding Kuhli Loaches in captivity is extremely difficult and rarely successful in home aquariums. They require very specific water conditions, dense vegetation, and trigger mechanisms that are hard to replicate. Most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught, and captive-bred individuals are uncommon.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful bottom-dwelling habits and compatible water parameters; both are non-aggressive community fish
Small, peaceful mid-water swimmers that won't compete with loaches; thrive in identical warm, soft water conditions
Peaceful invertebrates that occupy different ecological niches; ensure adequate hiding places for both species
Fellow bottom-dwellers with similar peaceful temperament and water requirements; both benefit from fine sand substrate
Peaceful mid-water fish that won't harass loaches; compatible temperature and pH ranges make them suitable companions
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid gill movement, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform 25% water changes daily, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 gallons) or ich medication; treat for 10-14 days
Skin Infections/Abrasions
Torn fins, red streaks on body, missing scales, cloudy patches on skin
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, ensure fine sand substrate to prevent belly damage, use antibacterial medication if infection spreads
Bacterial Gill Disease
Rapid or labored breathing, pale gills, loss of appetite, lethargy
Perform 50% water change immediately, check and improve water parameters (ammonia/nitrite must be 0), use broad-spectrum antibiotic if condition persists
Parasitic Infections
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, clamped fins
Quarantine affected fish, treat with anti-parasitic medication, maintain pristine water conditions, increase aeration
