Care Guide

Diet

Elegant Corydoras are omnivores that primarily feed on sinking pellets and wafers, supplemented 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They scavenge the substrate for leftover food and organic matter, but should receive dedicated feedings to ensure adequate nutrition. Feed small amounts that are consumed within a few minutes to avoid water quality issues.

Behavior

These moderately active bottom dwellers spend most of their time exploring and sifting through the substrate in search of food, displaying their characteristic barbel-probing behavior. They are peaceful schooling fish that exhibit reduced stress and more natural behavior when kept in groups of 6 or more. Males display vivid green iridescence on the upper body, particularly during social interactions and spawning attempts.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity is possible but requires specific conditions including cooler water temperatures (20-22°C), frequent water changes, and a well-established tank with plenty of vegetation. Females will lay eggs on hard surfaces after males perform courtship displays; eggs typically hatch in 3-5 days. Success rates vary, and fry require infusoria or liquid fry food initially before graduating to micro pellets.

Common Diseases

Barbel Erosion

Symptoms

Shortened, frayed, or missing barbels; difficulty locating food; behavioral changes

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes; ensure substrate is smooth sand rather than sharp gravel; provide quality sinking foods and maintain stable parameters

Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)

Symptoms

White spots on body and fins; increased scratching against substrate; lethargy; rapid breathing

Treatment

Raise temperature gradually to 28-29°C over 24 hours; perform daily 25% water changes; use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or ich-specific medication; treat for 7-10 days

Fin Rot

Symptoms

Frayed or deteriorating fins; discoloration at fin edges; fin loss in severe cases

Treatment

Perform 50% water change immediately; improve water quality and reduce stress; use antibiotic medication if bacterial; ensure adequate filtration and remove decaying food/plants

Dropsy

Symptoms

Bloated abdomen; scales standing out (pinecone appearance); lethargy; loss of appetite

Treatment

Isolate affected fish in hospital tank; perform frequent water changes; provide quality foods; use antibiotics if bacterial cause suspected; prognosis is often poor if advanced
