Elegant Corydoras
Corydoras elegans
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Callichthyidae
📍 Amazon basin, Peru and Ecuador
The elegant corydoras has a beautiful mosaic pattern of dark markings on a cream body, with males displaying vivid green iridescence on the upper body. A moderately active species that spends most of its time exploring the substrate. Peaceful and hardy, it is an excellent choice for planted community tanks.
Care Guide
Diet
Elegant Corydoras are omnivores that primarily feed on sinking pellets and wafers, supplemented 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They scavenge the substrate for leftover food and organic matter, but should receive dedicated feedings to ensure adequate nutrition. Feed small amounts that are consumed within a few minutes to avoid water quality issues.
Behavior
These moderately active bottom dwellers spend most of their time exploring and sifting through the substrate in search of food, displaying their characteristic barbel-probing behavior. They are peaceful schooling fish that exhibit reduced stress and more natural behavior when kept in groups of 6 or more. Males display vivid green iridescence on the upper body, particularly during social interactions and spawning attempts.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is possible but requires specific conditions including cooler water temperatures (20-22°C), frequent water changes, and a well-established tank with plenty of vegetation. Females will lay eggs on hard surfaces after males perform courtship displays; eggs typically hatch in 3-5 days. Success rates vary, and fry require infusoria or liquid fry food initially before graduating to micro pellets.
Tank Mates
Similar water parameters and peaceful temperament; occupy mid-water column without competing for bottom space
Peaceful algae eater with identical water requirements; both are bottom dwellers but occupy different ecological niches
Peaceful and compatible with corydoras; prefers slightly warmer water but within acceptable range
Peaceful invertebrate that shares substrate habitat; may occasionally be nipped but generally compatible
Peaceful schooling fish with matching water parameters; mid-water dweller that doesn't compete with corydoras
Peaceful dwarf cichlid with compatible temperature range; may occasionally dig but generally non-aggressive toward corydoras
Common Diseases
Barbel Erosion
Shortened, frayed, or missing barbels; difficulty locating food; behavioral changes
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes; ensure substrate is smooth sand rather than sharp gravel; provide quality sinking foods and maintain stable parameters
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins; increased scratching against substrate; lethargy; rapid breathing
Raise temperature gradually to 28-29°C over 24 hours; perform daily 25% water changes; use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or ich-specific medication; treat for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins; discoloration at fin edges; fin loss in severe cases
Perform 50% water change immediately; improve water quality and reduce stress; use antibiotic medication if bacterial; ensure adequate filtration and remove decaying food/plants
Dropsy
Bloated abdomen; scales standing out (pinecone appearance); lethargy; loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish in hospital tank; perform frequent water changes; provide quality foods; use antibiotics if bacterial cause suspected; prognosis is often poor if advanced
