Favites Brain Coral
Favites spp.
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Merulinidae
📍 Indo-Pacific Reef Systems
Favites (war coral / closed brain coral) are encrusting SPS corals with a brain-like maze pattern. They are moderately demanding and aggressive, extending sweeper tentacles at night to sting neighbours. Available in a wide range of vivid colour morphs.
Tank Mates
Hardy reef fish that can coexist if given adequate space away from sweeper tentacles
Beneficial for tank health and generally avoid coral tentacles; maintain distance from sweeper range
Peaceful scavengers that help maintain tank cleanliness without directly competing with coral
Algae grazers that pose no threat to corals and help maintain water quality
Effective algae control without bothering corals; compatible with reef environments
Small, peaceful fish that stay mobile and can avoid sweeper tentacles with proper spacing
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, pale or white appearance, visible zooxanthellae expulsion
Reduce light intensity temporarily, check water parameters (calcium, alkalinity, temperature stability), improve water flow, maintain stable conditions
Brown Jelly Disease
Brown mucus-like film spreading across coral surface, tissue recession, visible deterioration
Isolate affected coral if possible, perform targeted water changes, improve water quality and flow, consider antibiotic dips in severe cases
Parasitic Infections
Visible spots or discoloration, tissue damage, reduced polyp extension, mucus coating
Improve water quality and flow, maintain stable parameters, consider copper-based treatments only in quarantine (avoid in reef tanks)
Nutrient Deficiency
Pale coloration, reduced polyp extension, slow growth, loss of vibrancy
Increase feeding frequency with meaty foods, supplement with trace elements and amino acids, ensure adequate lighting for zooxanthellae
